Adventures of Being stuck alone on an elevator with a white woman

While being stuck alone in the elevator with a white woman, I turned to her to make sure she was okay. As i turned around with my Captain Marvel comic (CAROL CORPS!) and my Dr. Strange Shirt, I was surprised to hear her blurt out “don’t hurt me, I don’t have any money or drugs!!” I quickly reassured her that I wasn’t “that type of black guy” while adding ” what do you take me for!?”
she laughed and quickly warmed up to me and took my advice on breathing. The elevator eventually moved again, but before she got off the elevator she wanted a hug for the help I had given her. As I hugged her I couldn’t help but ask ( knowing the answer) what made her think I wanted drugs? To make a long story short, she admitted that being alone in a elevator with a black man terrified her.
This. This reminds me of the time I went to visit a friend who was throwing a small get together. When her friend asked openly ” what music should we listen to” right when I opened my mouth to say something, the woman responded with ” We are NOT listening to rap music” …. I actually wanted to listen to the 80s, Madonna to be exact. I responded promptly with “Now how did you know I wanted the fried chicken”… This is something I deal with every day. NO JOKE. I can understand how a woman can feel uncomfortable being alone in a elevator with a man, I get it. It hurts, but I get it. What I don’t understand is how people can make assumptions about an entire race.

It really is a shame, it’s not my job to make other people from different backgrounds feel comfortable, just like it’s not a woman’s job to respond or entertain these creeps on the street.
